Programme
The Seminar will be carried out during 3 days: 2 oral sessions and 1 field trip. Below you can find the provisional programme which we highlight the following items:
Keynote speeches
- Professor Desmond E. Walling, University of Exeter (United Kingdom). He is a geographer with particular interests in the field of erosion and sediment yields and catchment sediment budgets, sediment tracing, water quality and diffuse source pollution and catchment management. He is in the forefront of developing the application of environmental radionuclides to quantifying erosion and deposition rates in catchments, to establishing overbank deposition rates on river floodplains and to fingerprinting suspended sediment sources.
- Professor Maria Sala Sanjaume (Universidad de Barcelona). She has devoted her academic career to the study of the functioning of terrestrial landscapes based on the interrelation between their main elements: water, soil, sediments and vegetation. The degradation of natural systems, especially in Mediterranean drainage basins, has driven her scientific interest since the mid-1970s.
Field trip
It will be centred on the agricultural Na Borges River catchment. It is a Mediterranean groundwater-dominated river under traditional soil conservation practices developed since Roman Age. During the twentieth century, industrialisation and pressure from tourism activities have increased urbanised surfaces, which have a significant impact on many of the processes that control streamflow. Within this context, water and suspended sediment yields from Na Borges catchment are analyzed at different spatial and temporal scales by means of a continuous turbidity and suspended sediment monitoring and sampling programme. In addition, the sediment delivery components are also analyzed to provide the bases to build up catchment's sediment budget.
Social programme
Moreover to the scientific programme, the Organizing Committee pretends to show during the Seminar the culture and heritage of Mallorca, one of the main worldwide touristic destinations. Mallorca has a great and ancient heritage based on its location in the Middle of the Mediterranean Sea where several cultures like Roman, Muslims Catalan or Jewish has fingerprinted the island. Mallorca's landscape is also incredibly varied, from white sand beaches, authentic rural areas and abrupt mountains that drop to the Mediterranean Sea. Likewise, Mallorcan cuisine is meticulous, ancient and exquisite, combining its ingredients with surprising creativity. Therefore, the participants will have the opportunity to taste the rural Mallorcan cuisine during the fieldtrip as well as the contemporary Mallorcan cuisine in a restaurant located in the waterfront of Palma during the Social Dinner.
