FIELD
SUMARYThe excursion will be centred on
the agricultural Na Borges River catchment. It is a
Mediterranean groundwater-dominated river under traditional
soil conservation practices. During the twentieth century,
industrialisation and pressure from tourism activities have increased
urbanised surfaces, wich have a significant impact on many of the
processes that control streamflow. Within this context, water and
suspended sediment yields from Na Borges catchment are analized at
different spatial and temporal scales by means of a
contiunous turbidity and suspended sediment monitoring and sampling
programme. In addition, the sediment delivery components are also
analyzed to provide the bases to build up catchment's sediment
budget.
Stops
will be done at the following sites:
- Puig de Bonany headwaters: Geological and
geomorphological setting.
- Sa Cabana desviation: Flash
floods and urbanization.
- Sa Vall de la Nou:
Groundwater control on the suspended-sediment
load.
- Hortella d'en Cotanet: Social Lunch. (Further
information)
- Can Revull: Hydrology and
sediment transport in a small agricultural catchment dominated by
under-drained systems.
- Gorg de na Borges coastal lagoon. The sea
outlet: Interactions between fluvial and coastal
systems.
The
fieldtrip will describe the characteristics and processes that take
place in the catchment by means of the stop sites, such as geological
and geomorphological setting of the region and the basin, slope and
fluvial processes ocurring in the catchments, and human impacts on
waters and sediments of the Na Borges
River.
