Transport and means of communication. Son Sant Joan international airport, 8km outside the city of Palma, is the main means of access to the island of Mallorca. Around 20 million passengers use this airport annually; one of the busiest, especially in international terms. There is a regular bus connection between Palma and the airport and the journey takes 20 minutes.
By sea, over 800,000 passengers a year arrive in Mallorca. The two most important ports are Palma and Alcúdia, and they take both regular transport of passengers and tourist cruise liners.

Geography and climate. The total surface area of the Balearic Islands is 5,014 Km2, 3,640 Km2 of which correspond to Mallorca.
The Balearic Islands have a Mediterranean climate, characterised by moderate temperatures all year round. The average annual temperature oscillates between 16ºC and 17ºC. The mean annual precipitations are moderate or scarce and are more frequent in autumn, generally in October. In summer rainfall is practically non-existent. The winds vary according to the relief and the situation, but winds from the north are the predominant ones in the cold season; and from the east with local breezes in the summer.

Culture and traditions. The sea was the main means of communication of the island until a short time ago. This is why the first settlers in Mallorca were seafaring peoples, particularly from the Marenostrum. The first settlements, dating back to 4,000 BC, were found in the numerous natural caves along the Mallorcan coast. Afterwards, other groups arrived and settled in the interior of the island in colossal stone constructions called Talaiots, over a thousand of which are catalogued.
Long before the beaches, the visitors to the "Island of Calm" as it was called by Santiago Rusiñol, showed their admiration for the huge number of monuments, outstanding buildings, museums, etc. which make up the justifiably renowned historic Palma: Cathedral, Bellver Castle, Royal Palace, La Llotja, Gran Hotel, Museum of Mallorca, and the noble courtyards of Ca'n Vivot, Ca'n Oleza, Solleric. Monasteries, defence towers, cloisters, churches, council buildings and museums make up the geography of the 52 towns in Mallorca.

Leisure and services. The entertainment and leisure infrastructures, which flourished under the boom of tourist accommodation to be found in practically all the areas of the island, offer diversity and special characteristics for maximum enjoyment of holiday time.
Mallorcan craft has little to do with the products that can be found in souvenir shops which still subsist in most tourist resorts. Despite the tourist expansion, many hand-made products are still produced on the island such as footwear, leather, jewellery, glass, pottery, embroidery and cloth.
