The beautiful little village of Valldemosa is situated in the hills to the north of Palma and contains the old Carthusian Monastery known as La Cartuja, and the old Palace of King Don Sancho. These buildings date from the 14th century and are fascinating to visit. The monastery used to give accommodation to guests, the most famous of which were Chopin and George Sand in the winter of 1838 and the rooms in which they stayed are open to visitors, together with the Museum, the monks’ pharmacy, the Prior’s Cells, the library, the Church and the delightful gardens. If you prefer you may visit the Costa Nord Foundation, founded by Michael Douglas,  instead of La Cartuja.

A country estate dating back to the 10th century, shows the visitor how its people lived over the centuries, from medieval dungeons to the first typewriters, and how everything that they needed, was made on the estate, from the making and dyeing of cloth to the manufacture of shoes and perfumes. The estate is home to various Majorcan animals and the lovely gardens have natural springs
