Causal architecture of natural L2 German grammars: Stage-like vs. holistic representation

Speaker: Hyoun-A Joo, Pennsylvania State University

Authors: Hyoun-A Joo

This paper investigates the clausal structure of ‘stable state’ L2 German grammars and aims to shed light onto the question whether the clausal architecture is represented in an incremental or holistic fashion. The former is proposed by the Organic Grammar approach (Vainikka & Young-Scholten, 2011) predicting a stage-like development and representation of the clause structure (VP > NegP > TP > AgrP > CP). The latter is suggested by the Feature Reassembly approach (Lardiere 2008, also Putnam & Sánchez, 2013) assuming the presence of all functional projections in the L2 grammar. L1 Korean immigrants to Germany performed a sentence completion, a loaded memory repetition, and an acceptability judgment task. Preliminary descriptive results of the production data of nine high-proficient and eleven native-like participants speak in favor for the more holistic view of L2 grammars as for the high-proficient group CP does not necessarily seem to entail AgrP.
