In light of previous literature suggesting linguistic similarities between SLI children and certain groups of ASD children, we compare both groups in the comprehension of subject and object relatives and in obligatory control structures (subject control with prometer ‘promise’ and object control with dizer para ‘tell’). We evaluate the hypothesis that comprehension problems with subject control (with promise-type verbs) may be analysed as intervention effects, parallel to intervention effects in object relatives. We present the results of two tasks, an act-out and a reference judgment task, applied to 11 SLI children, 11 ASD children (both 8-11 years) and 82 typically developing children (3 to 11 years). We argue that (i) syntactic impairment in the SLI and in the ASD groups is not equivalent; (ii) the nature of the problem posed to acquisition by object relatives and by subject control structures (with promise-type verbs) is not the same.
