The Age of Onset of exposure factor: On a difference between Greek- Italian 2L1 and L2 near- natives compared to controls in the production of null and overt subject pronouns in Italian.
Authors: Elisa Di Domenico and Ioli Baroncini
This work adds new data concerning the production of null and overt subjects in near-natives’ Italian, highlighting the role of the Age of Onset of exposure factor. We compared the productions of a control group and of two groups of Greek – Italian near- natives differing for AoO of exposure. Results show that L2ers (but not 2L1ers) produce (highly) significantly more overt pronouns than controls. When cross- linguistic influence is not expected/does not occur (as in the case of Greek – Italian where overt pronouns are produced to a comparable extent, as a Preliminary Study shows) a difference between 2L1ers and L2ers emerges: overt pronouns represent an acquisitional strategy only in the case of post-puberty Age of Onset of exposure.
