Syntax matters in the acquisition of copulas verbs

This talk deals with the acquisition of Spanish copular verbs (ser and estar) by English natives focusing on their distribution with adjectives where copular combination is obligatory and where it depends on discourse. Although most works defend that ser is easy to master, this talk shows that ser is not fully acquired at advanced stages of proficiency. Results from a study involving four tasks on oral production and levels of acceptance and rejection, administered to 71 English natives learning Spanish and 25 Spanish monolinguals, show that levels of accurate rejection of ser remain low at advanced levels in all cases, those where estar is the only grammatical copula and those where it is the only felicitous possibility. This indicates that acquisition is not explained by the syntactic complexity of the copulas or the complexity of discourse factors. We show that it is independent syntactic properties of the adjectives that matter.
