We investigated the interpretation of sentences with negated disjunction of the form “NOT A or B” in Italian, French, and Dutch learners. In English, these sentences generate a “conjunctive entailment” (they are true when both A and B are false) whereas in Japanese they don’t. The circumstances in which these sentences are true in English constitute a subset of the circumstances in which these sentences are true in Japanese. Our findings with Italian, French and Dutch children corroborate previous studies with English and Japanese children (see Goro 2004), showing that all children start with a “conjunctive” interpretation, in compliance with the Semantic Subset Principle (Crain 2012). Moreover, our study shows that Italian and French children converge to the adult setting earlier than their Japanese peers. We argue that this is related to the presence of negative concord in Italian and French.
