In this contribution we discuss an experiment with Hungarian children aged 4:4–7:0. We assume
a stage theory of acquisition for temporal expressions: the acquisition of connectives is said to follow
the acquisition of tense forms (Van Geenhoven 2006 and references); during this stage children learn
to use connectives in building temporal anaphora.
Our predictions/expectations were that i) Owing to its distinct modeltheoretic properties and its complexity, before is acquired later than after. ii) Owing to these properties before provides a less-then-perfect anchor for temporal
anaphora, so it can be expected to be dispreferred. Our results show that Hungarian children do indeed disprefer elott `before', and use various strategies to evade its use. Més informació:
